You cannot guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend your business. You can make your public information easier to discover and assess: explain your services clearly, publish useful answers, show genuine evidence and check that relevant search crawlers can access the site. Being accessible is a starting point, not a promise of recommendation.
What does “showing up in AI” actually mean?
A business name mentioned in an answer, a linked website citation and a visitor arriving from that link are different outcomes. An assistant may use web search for one question and answer another without it. The wording, context and location in a question can change the response.
Define the outcome you care about. For most small businesses, a relevant customer understanding the offer and making contact is more valuable than appearing in a screenshot of a test prompt. Treat AI visibility as one discovery channel alongside conventional search, referrals and your existing customer relationships.
Can ChatGPT search access your website?
OpenAI identifies OAI-SearchBot as its search crawler. Its documentation explains that allowing this crawler is separate from allowing GPTBot, which relates to model training. Ask your website provider to check both the site’s crawler rules and any hosting security controls against the current documentation. Access does not guarantee a citation or recommendation.

What information should your website make clear?
Start with the facts a customer needs to choose you: the business name, actual services, areas served, relevant experience, contact details and how the work is priced or scoped. Keep these consistent with the profiles you control. Explain specialist terms in ordinary language.
Create a useful page for each genuinely distinct service. A page about commercial painting could explain preparation, working around occupied premises, the quoting process and examples of suitable projects. That gives a reader more to assess than a repeated statement that you are the best painter in every suburb.
Publish articles answering the questions people ask before contacting you. Begin with the direct answer, explain the conditions and show a practical example. Include sources for factual guidance, and update details when they change. This is an editorial approach to making information useful; it is not a known formula for forcing an AI system to select your business.
Do you need special AI markup or hundreds of articles?
Google says its AI search features use the same foundational SEO practices and do not require special AI files or a separate type of structured data. Pages need to be eligible for Google Search, but eligibility does not guarantee inclusion in an AI answer. That guidance applies to Google’s features; it is not a specification for every AI platform.

What is a sensible plan for a small business?
Choose three or four buying questions your team already answers repeatedly. Write a complete, specific answer to each, using your real process and clearly labelled examples. Link each guide to the relevant service so someone can move from learning to deciding.
Add evidence you can stand behind: project descriptions, permissioned customer feedback, qualifications where relevant and useful demonstrations. State the circumstances behind any result. Avoid inventing statistics, generating fake reviews or claiming associations you do not have.
Review a small set of relevant questions periodically and record the wording, date and whether search was used. Use these checks to discover confusing or outdated information, not as a reliable ranking report. If you measure referral traffic, compare it with genuine enquiries and disclose the measurement appropriately.
Be cautious of offers that promise a guaranteed ChatGPT position. Ask exactly what work is being delivered, what evidence supports the approach and how outcomes will be measured. Good website information remains useful to customers even when the way an assistant finds and presents answers changes.
Your next-step checklist
- Define whether you want relevant mentions, linked visits or enquiries.
- Check search crawler access with your website provider.
- Make service, location and contact information clear and consistent.
- Answer real buying questions with specific, supportable information.
- Review referrals and enquiry quality without treating one prompt as a ranking.
